Retreating Trigeminal Neuralgia With Gamma Knife
Patients can be treated a second and even a third time with Gamma Knife Radiosurgery (GKRS) for trigeminal neuralgia (tic douloureux). We have treated 530 patients with trigeminal neuralgia at San Diego Gamma Knife Center. There are no treatments which have 100% effectiveness in treating tic pain, including microvascular decompression, glycerol injection, balloon compression and radiosurgery. Additionally, facial pain can recur months to years after initial treatment with all modern methods of pain control. About 18% (94) of our patients have returned to SDGKC for a second treatment on an average of 34 months after initial radiosurgery. We have found a second treatment is just as effective as the first treatment … we expect an 85% response rate. Finally, 2% (11) patients have returned for a third treatment on an average of 37 months after their second treatment.
